Bessemer, Wilbur "Weeb" Kursel, 99,
Wilbur Kursel, 99, passed away on November 10, 2021, at Hospice of the Valley in North Lima, Ohio. Wilbur was born on November 17, 1921, in Bessemer, son of the late Joseph and Linda (Mackey) Kursel.
Wilbur was a 1940 graduate of Bessemer High School. Wilbur kept in contact with his classmates, mainly organizing the yearly class reunions. He served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII serving in the African Theatre as a Chief Control Tower Operator and Aerial Gunner, he was honorably discharged in 1945.
He was the owner and operator of Kursel Esso Service in Bessemer for 20 years. He enjoyed handing out candy treats to the kids that would stop by to say hello to this very generous man. He loved seeing the kids smile.
He was elected to the office of Bessemer Boro Council in 1957. He has been an active member of the American Legion since 1947, where he served as the Commander of the Earl J. Watt Post 638. He also served as the Post Adjutant for many years.
He worked for Mohawk Area School District where he was head custodian at the elementary school, he retired in 1993.
He was a lifelong member at Bessemer Presbyterian Church and the church choir. He served as an Elder and Sunday School Teacher as well as many church committees. He loved music and rendered his talent as a soloist at the church choir of which he sang in over 60 years.
Survivors include his son, Joseph W. (Melissa) Kursel, of Bessemer, two stepsons, Frank and James Scilla, four grandchildren, Hunter, Sierra, Sidney, and Haley, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Troggio Scilla Kursel whom he married in 1962, she died on January 7, 2010, his brothers, William "Bill" Kursel and Edward "Fran" Kursel, and his sister Anna Mae Slavich.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2021, from 1-3 pm and again from 5-7 pm at Terry Cunningham Funeral Home, 203 Oak Street in Bessemer. There will be a military service at 3 pm on Saturday at the funeral home presented by the New Castle Area Honor Guard.
A church service for Wilbur will be held on Sunday, November 14, 2021, at 3 pm at the Bessemer Presbyterian Church. Burial will be held on Monday at Castleview Memorial Gardens.
In place of flowers, donations can be made to the Bessemer Presbyterian Church, 29 N. Main Street in Bessemer.
