Phyllis A. (McCurdy) Penwell

Phyllis A. (McCurdy) Penwell, 83, a longtime resident of Bessemer, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 16, 2023. She was a resident at Masternick Memorial Health Care of New Middletown, OH when she passed.  Phyllis was born in Youngstown, OH on January 30, 1940. She is the daughter of the late Dwight and Melda (Latshaw) McCurdy. 

Phyllis was a graduate of Bessemer High School and was a dedicated member of the Bessemer Presbyterian Church, where she served as Deacon for six years. Additionally, she worked as a secretary in the  Mohawk Area School District for 35 years. Phyllis also served on the Bicentennial Day and Community Day committees. Phyllis enjoyed scrapbooking, sports and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. 

Phyllis is survived by her son, Scott (Sherry) Penwell; her sisters, Janice (Gary) Young and Shirley Overman; her grandchildren, Brenna (Jonny) Kline, Ryan (Chelsey) Penwell, Lucas Penwell, Matthew (Kimberly) Brentin, Jeff (Britney) Brentin, and Megan (Ryan) Tomlin. Phyllis was also survived by five great-grandchildren, Chloe Brentin, Garrett and Preston Tomlin, Rory Penwell, Beau Brentin, and her son-in-law Ivan Brentin.  

Phyllis was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Raymond O. Penwell, whom she married on May 9, 1959. They were married for a wonderful 62 years. Raymond passed away on September 4, 2021. Phyllis was also preceded in death by her parents and her daughter Sherry Brentin.

Calling hours will take place on Thursday, April 20, 2023, from 5:00-8:00 PM and Friday, April 21, 2023, from 10:00-11:00 AM at the Terry Cunningham Funeral home located at 203 Oak Street, Bessemer PA. The funeral service for Phyllis will occur immediately following calling hours on Friday, April 21, 2023. She will be laid to rest at Graceland Cemetery.
